The Future of Public Relations: Are Press Conferences Outdated?

In recent sports news, tennis player Naomi Osaka made headlines following her decision to not participate in any of her press commitments for the French Open in an effort to protect her mental health. The backlash from tournament organizers was almost immediate; Osaka was fined $15,000 for her refusal and given an additional warning that she would be suspended from the tournament altogether if she didn’t fulfill her media obligations.

As a result, Osaka voluntarily withdrew from the tournament and published an official statement on her social channels revealing her ongoing battle with depression and criticizing the traditional press conference format.

This revelation led to a larger discussion about the importance of mental health, self-care and best practices for public relations professionals should a client express a similar concern.

PR News Online revealed a few takeaways and lessons publicists should keep in mind for similar situations:

  • Always keep your client’s needs in mind and discuss any fears or concerns they have
  • Plan ahead. Vet as many questions from reporters prior to a press conference to avoid repetition
  • Conduct a media training session to help your client prepare for potential media questions
  • Identify an alternative method for your client to meet media demands/requirements. For example:
    • In lieu of a press conference, your client can distribute a formal statement to media via email
    • Offer an exclusive with a prominent outlet who can help tell your client’s story

What do you think of Osaka’s refusal to participate in the press conference? At Noisy Trumpet we strive to stay ahead of the curve by familiarizing ourselves with current events, and listening to the input of those around us. J. Philippus Art Studio & Gallery continues to gain momentum as a front-runner in the ever-evolving San Antonio art scene. Local artist and studio owner Jeanne Philippus was featured in the June issue of San Antonio Magazine in the Women to Watch 2021 feature. Jeanne is constantly creating new classes for the studio, and we’re excited to see what her next feature will be. On June 15, Modern in San Antonio visited the studio and did an Instagram LIVE segment, as well as featuring the studio on their Instagram feed. We enjoy when our clients are featured in live segments so that their true personalities can shine through.

San Antonio Sports kicked off this month with a press conference announcing their upcoming Fiesta FitFest event taking place April 8-10, 2022 in San Antonio, Texas. Fiesta FitFest Launches With Official Logo Designed By Noisy Trumpet

On Tuesday, June 1, San Antonio Sports announced its new Fiesta-sanctioned event, Fiesta FitFest, which will take place April 8-10, 2022. The new 3-day event will feature ‘Pedals, Medals and Fun’ for the whole family. From Alpha Warrior athletic events, to a 5k/10k run, music and food, to the final Tour De France-style cycling event, L’Etape San Antonio, there will be something for everyone to enjoy.

Noisy Trumpet was tasked with designing the official logo for this new event while incorporating various themes to capture the nature of the weekend festivities. Senior Art Director, Daniel Castro, brought his exceptional logo expertise to the job and perfectly featured unique elements to the logo.

First, the ribbon is the core element for the logo. You’ll also notice The Alamo’s iconic silhouette formed with the ribbon graphic. In addition, Fiesta colors were used within the ribbon signifying not only an athletic event, but also a true Fiesta-style celebration.

Next, the star element subtly breaks the ribbon as a reference to winning an athletic competition. The chosen fonts are more athletic in design; they are modern with an international athletic feel. Finally, if a presenting sponsor is secured, the presenting sponsor’s logo would go beneath the Fiesta FitFest logo thereby forming an overall torch shape – a subtle reference to the international competition/Olympics.

“Our team has the honor of being on the ground floor of creating this important event for the city. There’s nothing more foundational than designing a new logo that captures the essence of all the festivities planned,” stated Fran Yanity, CEO and President of Noisy Trumpet Digital & PR.

The Importance of Team Building

As any good leader knows, team building and camaraderie are critical to achieving exceptional results and high levels of employee satisfaction. When the pandemic hit last year, the Noisy Trumpet team had to get creative with how to continue connecting as a team.

From virtual Happy Hours, to charcuterie board round tables and virtual pizza parties, we tried it all. And, it worked! While we couldn’t physically be together, the ability to connect with co-workers in a relaxed environment via Zoom still achieved the desired result of helping people connect and cope in an environment of disconnection and worry. It allowed everyone to meet without an agenda, to check in with each other and just reconnect. Happy, relaxed employees deliver better results.

Now that companies are gradually transitioning back to the office setting, we thought it was time to have our first in-person team building event in over a year. At the end of April, the Noisy Trumpet team met at J Philippus Art Studio and Gallery for a fun afternoon of glass art making. From cardinals to crosses, hearts and Fiesta art to beautiful sunsets, our team made it all. There were even some snacks and sips of wine to add to the fun!

Employee satisfaction is more important now than ever before. Team outings don’t detract from productivity; they increase it. With optimally-timed gatherings and outings without an agenda, teams can efficiently connect, enjoy each other’s company and recharge, so they bring their best to the work place each day.

We’ve found that while presenting these trends to the team, this sparks conversation and facilitates the brainstorming process on how we can incorporate these trends into our client work. Social Media Best Practices: How to Tailor Your Content to Each Social Platform

This past year, social media has brought us new methods of collaboration. From Tik Tok dances to the launch of Instagram reels, social media platforms provided us with innovative ways to connect with each other during the pandemic. Businesses and individuals alike, utilize social platforms to share their stories, express opinions, and build overall awareness for their brand. In order to execute this successfully, brands must focus on the quality of content, not the quantity.

Here are a few ways to properly tailor content to Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram:

Twitter is well known for its unique animated gifs and clever hashtags. Before ‘tweeting’ check content for the following:

  • Keep ‘tweets’ short and concise. Twitter users do not like to read long paragraphs.
  • A tweet can be utilized as a tool to share a link to a company blog or to promote event registrations. Always double check to see if the link is active.
  • Is your ‘tweet’ shareable? Yes, likes are always positive but the ultimate goal is to get your content retweeted and shared throughout Twitter. In a Palo Alto Research Center study, researchers found that tweets that contain a hashtag, mention, or short URL are more likely to be retweeted.

Facebook is a popular tool to educate, share, and create video content.

  • The most shareable content on Facebook are videos. According to the Social Science Research Network, approximately 65 percent of people are visual learners. Use videos to educate and share stories related to the brand.
  • When writing a Facebook Post, ensure that the brand message is clear and not lost in translation. Use words the brand’s target audience can comprehend and is able to understand. According to Influencer Market Hub, an ideal length for a post contains 40 to 80 characters. A post with 40 or fewer characters earns 86% more engagement than longer posts.

Instagram is famous for its visually creative photos and stories.

  • An Instagram page is the face of a brand. When possible, select a high-quality photo with crisp colors that highlights brand content. Additionally, be cautious with the filters used because including too many can lead to inconsistency within a feed.
  • Instagram stories and reels entertain and educate target audiences. Filters and boomerangs are great tools to have fun with content. Stories refresh constantly so make the brand story as eye-catching as possible. Include music, create a unique hashtag, tag a location, or add interactive stickers as a way to increase engagement. If the story grabs attention, the target consumer will revisit your brand’s page.
